A Tribute to John Hickson OBE, Cdr. RN (Rtd) President of Winchester Hockey Club 1989 2012

It is with great sadness that I pay this tribute to our President John Hickson, who died on the 20th January 2012. His funeral is to be held at Basingstoke crematorium on Tuesday 7th February at 1145hrs.

John has been a ‘Full-On’ member of the hockey club since his arrival to Winchester in 1972. He has seen us through many significant Club changes: - The Venue at least five locations, the surface from grass to astro, the rules from Bully-Off and Side-line Roll-Ins to the very fast game of today, the Club colour changes and the successful amalgamation of Winchester Ladies with Winchester Men to form the successful Hockey Club we have today. His presidency saw us to the Clubs Centenary on the 8th March 1991.

In June 1982 John was awarded the O.B.E. for his services to the Military an award of which he was extremely proud.

During that year he was influential in the forming, with other local clubs, of the Winchester Sports Association, its clubhouse at North Walls Recreation Ground being built the following year.
In 1989 John accepted the role of President, a position he actively pursued until his untimely death. His thirty year presidency continued as it had begun. His aim, I know, was to visit as many different team matches as physically possible, to treat all teams as if they were the 1st XI no matter their ability, age or gender.

As John retired from his active playing career he turned to spectating, coaching, encouraging, talent spotting or socialising, either at the pitch side or after match venue.

He was a staunch supporter of this Hockey Club and one, the like of whom we may never see again. In the last few years, when travelling was more difficult, he could be seen, at the University ground, on most Saturday afternoons shouting out “Come on Winchester”.

The tributes that have been sent are beautiful, sincere and extremely varied. However, the main theme is that of his tremendous enthusiasm, advice, help, consideration and guidance. Many recipients of that advice have gone on to reach very high standards of hockey, to which they owe to John.

No one person within Winchester Hockey Club will ever know the full extent of John’s involvement; it was too varied and special.

We all have our special memories of a true gentleman and a very special friend. He will be greatly missed.

Vice President

Robin Finch VP

It is with sadness that I am passing on the news that Robin Finch died in hospital a couple of days ago.

Rob was Club VP and was a stalwart of Winchester Hockey Club for many years. He started playing for the Club on a regular basis in 1969 but had in fact played for the Club before that in his days at Peter Symonds College, being one of the boys that Reg Bray used to draft in during the 1960s any time the club was short of players.

Rob played in the first eleven for many years and also in many other teams within the Club, finishing his Winchester playing days a few years ago in our vets setup.

In addition to playing, Rob also pulled more than his weight in helping to run the Club, among other things having spent several years as Club Treasurer.
