Ladies 2 chasing for promotion

Winchester Ladies 2s V IOW - Final Score 3-0

Winchester soaked up some early pressure from the IOW side in the first ten minutes of the game, as IOW stretched the defence and gave the Winchester side plenty to do.

After a slow start and some great goal keeping by Nadine Warren, Winchester started to play with confidence and purpose. They went 1-0 up after winning a short corner which was converted by Kari Dougall.

Half time had the score at 1-0 to Winchester, but IOW were putting in a solid performance, and some excellent attacking through the centre of the pitch. Winchester still had plenty to do to ensure they took three points.

Patience in the second half and a better transfer across all parts of the pitch meant more opportunities for the Winchester side, Niki Wilkins picked up a loose ball in the middle of the pitch, passed out to Anna Morgan who then hit it across to the top of the D for Polly Pressland to pick up and sweep into the bottom corner of the goal, 2-0 to Winchester.

IOW continued to apply pressure towards the end of the second half, which led to a 1 v 1 with their attacker and the Winchester goalkeeper, Nadine Warren. Quick thinking from Nadine led to her sliding into the challenge, successfully sweeping the ball out of the D!

Hungry for another goal, the Winchester attackers led by Marie Atkinson continued to put pressure on the IOW defence. Marie managed to win the ball on the half way line, and drive the ball forward, passing it ahead to Zippy Cornburg who drove towards the goal, then passed it in front of the keeper into the path of Marie for her to finish into an empty goal with only minutes remaining.

Final score 3-0 to Winchester putting them into 3rd position with a big match next week against 2nd placed Alton. Another win could see the Winchester Ladies take that 2nd promotional spot!
